Dental pulp is the soft area in the center of the tooth where the veins, nerves, and connective tissues are located. When the dental pulp becomes diseased or infected, Dr. Kenneth Schweizer may perform a root canal in Sarasota, Florida. Root canal treatment is the process by which our dentist removes the infected dental pulp, cleans the tooth thoroughly, and seals it. If you experience any of the following symptoms, root canal treatment may be necessary:
- Severe toothache
- Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
- Discoloration of a tooth
- Swelling and pain in the gums
- A pimple on the gums that will not go away
Our dentist will first take an X-ray of your root canals to examine their shape and to check for infection in the surrounding bone. An access hole is made in the tooth, through which the infected dental pulp, bacteria, and debris are removed. Our dentist will use root canal files to clean out your tooth all the way down the roots. Once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, our dentist will seal it with a rubber compound and a sealer paste. The access hole is closed with a dental filling.
