Gum disease, which is also called gingivitis, is an infection that attacks the tissues and bone that surround and support your teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis can cause the loss of permanent teeth. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on the teeth and below the gums. The following can also contribute to the development of gingivitis:
- Hormonal changes
- Poor dental hygiene
- Family history of dental disease
If you experience one or more of the following symptoms, Dr. Kenneth Schweizer may treat gingivitis in Sarasota, Florida:
- Gums that bleed easily when you brush and floss
- Red, swollen, and sore gums
- Bad breath or a bad taste that will not go away
- Gums that are pulling back from the teeth
- Loose or drifting teeth
- A change in your bite
When a patient has gingivitis, our dentist may recommend a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing. Our dentist will clean your teeth of plaque and tartar, above and beneath the gums. Then your tooth roots will be smoothed, which makes it difficult for plaque to adhere to them. This also gives your gums a clean surface to reattach to.
